“Late Stage Capitalism” is theory stemming from socialist analysis that the form of capitalism that society shifted into in the first half of the 20th century represents capitalism at its highest terminal stage, with major facets including globalization, financialization, and heightened consumerism. With this comes the idea such a stage will not sustain, paving the way for socialism. For many decades, such theories remained fairly obscure, however recent years have seen a revival of the term, seeing many of our society’s absurdities and tensions as indicators of capitalism being at a terminal phase.
